Letter to the editor:

Climate change demands action

I am not alone in having concerns about the effects of climate change, including health impacts, economic losses, extreme weather events and loss of species.

We’ve seen devastating wildfires in the West and catastrophic hurricanes in the Southeast. Ice is melting rapidly in the Arctic, contributing to rising sea levels. Meanwhile, drought-stricken Las Vegas keeps getting dryer and warmer.

We need to send Congress a message that it’s time to act. We know the Trump administration is hostile to climate action, but Congress can turn the tide with bipartisan effort. There is already a Climate Solutions Caucus in the House of Representatives, with 86 members, equally divided between Republicans and Democrats. They are taking climate change seriously.

Other members of the House and Senate need to step up as well. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., has spoken about the urgency of dealing with climate change while Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., remains mostly silent on the issue.

Now is a great time for candidates to state their positions on climate change because it is on the minds of voters.
