Dr. Douglas Piirto of Crestline Forestry Inc. to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

HOBART, WISCONSIN, UNITED STATES, January 8, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- There are over 5,000 types of products that come from forests that we depend on each day.

The field of forestry is associated with how to manage the forest and keep it healthy.

“We have to dispel people of the notion that forestry is about destroying the woods,” says Dr. Douglas Piirto. “We wouldn't go into forestry with that idea in mind. At least I didn't.”

Dr. Piirto is the founder of Crestline Forestry Inc., dedicated to bringing a contemporary vision to forestry and natural resources management. Crestline Forestry’s vision is to help shape the future of forestry by providing excellent teaching, applied research and sustainable forest and land management advice.

“Forestry is an art and a science,” says Dr. Piirto. “People who manage forests do so to meet a variety of objectives. There’s a lot that needs to be protected. There's a lot of engineering. There's a lot of best-management practices. Overall you're associated with trying to improve the health of the forest while providing what Americans need from those forests.”

Dr. Piirto received his PhD from UC-Berkeley’s Forestry and Wood Science Program in 1977. Though he could have easily remained in academia, he wanted to get firsthand experience in the forest, accepting a job with the US Forest Service.

“If I was going to teach forestry one day, I had to know what it takes to manage forests,” says Dr. Piirto. “And I loved being in the woods anyway.”

Dr. Piirto worked for 10 years as a certified silviculturist in the US Forest Service’s timber management office. He later joined California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) for 30 years teaching forestry and natural resources until he retired in 2015. But retirement was only the beginning.

“I knew I couldn't just walk away from something that I had worked so hard to become.”

Today, Crestline Forestry inspires lifelong learning to sustainably manage forests and wildlands.

“I think the right answer is between preservation and conservation as we try to manage resources,” says Dr. Piirto. “We have over 300 million people in the United States and they have needs. And those needs are met with resources. When you see all the holes in the ground that we've created with the extraction of non-renewables, you understand forestry is a good thing. Because I can grow you another tree.”

CUTV News Radio will feature Dr. Douglas Piirto in an interview with Doug Llewelyn on January 10th at 2pm EST.
