A 54-year-old Ukrainian environmental expert - who had arrived in the country to participate in a climate meet - was found dead in the bathtub of his hotel room on the second day of the conference, which concluded on March 7. Investigations revealed that he died of cardiac arrest.
The deceased was identified as Dr Serjiy Lavrynenko, a professor at Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. He had come to attend the 5th Ajman International Environment Conference on 'Climate Change and Sustainability'.
On the first day of the conference, Lavrynenko presented his paper on 'Formation of hierarchical zinc oxide nanostructures for solar energy converters and photovoltaic' and left early for his room in Ramada Hotel in Ajman. He was later contacted by the committee members of the conference, who requested him to come back and join them. However, he apologised and told them he was unwell. They offered to take him to the hospital but he refused.
On the second day of the conference, he was found dead in his room by the employees of the hotel. The police investigation confirmed it was natural death.
Police officials said that they received a call from the hotel management at the operations room about the body of the expert being found in the bathtub of his room. A police team immediately reached the site. The preliminary investigation and final report revealed that the man died due to cardiac arrest.
Engineer Khalid Al Housani, executive director of public health and environment at the department of municipality and planning, said that the deceased came to participate in the conference at his own cost after he was invited by the scientific committee of the conference.
The Ajman Municipality will carry out necessary procedure for the body's repatriation to his country and bear all costs.
