It is mandatory for all thermal power plants in India to install FGD technology
HYDERABAD: GE Power, a General Electric (GE) group company, on Tuesday announced that it has bagged a contract for Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system from power major NTPC worth Rs 309 crore and is to be installed at one of at one NTPC’s units in Telangana to provide cleaner technology and bring in efficiency in operations.

The system will be installed at the phase-I of its NTPC’s Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) which has a capacity of 2X800 megawatt to comply with the new emission norms for thermal power plants by the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF & CC) in December 2015.

According to Andrew H DeLeone, managing director, GE Power India, “Given that coal is and will remain the energy mainstay for India in the times to come, it is imperative that the country upgrades its thermal fleet with higher efficiency, cleaner technology. Technologies such as FGD can play a significant role in controlling emissions from coal-based plants by reducing the SOx (sulphur oxides) content in exit flue gas to the lowest levels anywhere in the world”.

The FGD package will be installed in a period of 30 months for Unit-1 and 36 months for Unit-2 from the date of contract.

The wet FGD system will have a wet limestone-based open spray tower type design, comprising of an absorber system, slurry preparation and dewatering system.

An installed base of around 165 GW of thermal plant plants has been identified by CEA for implementation of FGD, over and above the power plants presently under execution.
