Saturday: Cherry Beach plastic pollution cleanup

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrates Coastal Cleanup Day with hundreds of volunteers at events across the country

Toronto, Sept. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energetic volunteers are tackling plastic pollution as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrates its 25th season on International Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday, Sept. 15, with events across the country, including at Cherry Beach Park in Toronto.

The Shoreline Cleanup program, a partnership of Ocean Wise® and World Wildlife Fund Canada, is Canada’s largest volunteer-powered conservation program. Over the last quarter century, Shoreline Cleanup participants have cleaned almost 34,000 kilometres of shoreline and picked up more than 1.2 million kilograms of litter, preventing it from entering the water where it can harm wildlife and break up into microplastics and enter the food stream.

When: Saturday, Sept. 15 

  • 9:30 a.m.: Registration opens 
  • 10 a.m.: Cleanup begins 
  • 11:30 a.m.: Closing remarks, results reporting and prizes  

 

Where: Cherry Beach – Clarke Beach Park 

  • At the foot of Cherry Street, near the main washrooms, look for the tents.  
  • TTC directions: 121D Fort-York Esplanade Bus right to Cherry Beach parking area.
