Saturday: Petrie Island plastic pollution cleanup

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrates Coastal Cleanup Day with hundreds of volunteers at events across the country

Ottawa, Sept. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energetic volunteers will tackle plastic pollution as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrates its 25th season on International Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday, Sept. 15, with events across the country, including at Petrie Island in Ottawa.

The Shoreline Cleanup program, a partnership of Ocean Wise® and World Wildlife Fund Canada, is Canada’s largest volunteer-powered conservation program. Over the last quarter century, Shoreline Cleanup participants have cleaned almost 34,000 kilometres of shoreline and picked up more than 1.2 million kilograms of litter, preventing it from entering the water where it can harm wildlife and break up into microplastics that can enter the food stream.

What: Shoreline cleanup with conservation activities. Volunteers will also be able to assist in removing invasive species and wrapping trees for beaver protection.  

 

When: Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 

  • 9:30 a.m.: Registration opens 
  • 10 a.m.: Cleanup begins 
  • 11:30 a.m.: Closing remarks, results reporting and prizes  

 

Where: Petrie Island Park, Ottawa  

  • The area is part public beach and part protected wetlands 
  • Look for tents on the west side of the parking area 

 

Who 

  • Catherine Paquette, freshwater specialist, WWF-Canada 
  • Students from Algonquin College, participating in WWF’s Living Planet @ Campus program.  

 

Other events are planned for Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver.
