FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contacts

PUBLIC NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: Revised Draft Environmental Assessment and Section 4(f) Evaluation Rehabilitation of Broad Branch Road NW

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Park Service (NPS), would like to announce the availability of the Revised Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Rehabilitation of Broad Branch Road, NW. The EA analyzes a range of alternatives for the rehabilitation of the 1.5-mile segment of Broad Branch Road NW, between Linnean Avenue NW and Beach Drive NW. The Revised Draft EA updates the findings presented in the initial EA which was published in October 2013. The FHWA has oversight responsibility for the Federal-aid program and has participating funds in this project.  The existing two-lane Broad Branch Road lies almost entirely within DDOT right-of-way and is maintained by DDOT. The eastern edge of the roadway between 27th Street and Beach Drive borders Rock Creek Park, which is owned by the federal government and administered by the NPS.

The EA has been prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and assesses the potential impacts of the proposed alternatives on the natural, cultural, and human environment.  Additionally, the effects of the project to resources protected under Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966 have been evaluated as well as historic resources in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

DDOT is inviting you to review the Revised Draft EA.  However, in order to reduce the risk for COVID-19 (as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and Mayor Bowser’s current Coronavirus 2019 Phase Two Guidance, a complete digital copy of the Revised Draft EA; including all technical appendices will be placed on the project website: www.broadbranchrdea.com. The document will consist of several files for the ease of downloading.

The EA will be available for public review starting October 16, 2020 and comments will be received on the project website until November 16, 2020. Only written comments can be accepted during this 30-day comment period.
